                    Joseph Waurin Excellence in Education Award

                                 Application Instructions

 

PURPOSE: To acknowledge and honor a genetic educator who has demonstrated outstanding professional capabilities in the teaching of students at either the graduate or undergraduate level.

ELIGIBILITY:

  1. Nominees must have a minimum of 5 years teaching experience. These need not be consecutive nor full time. No academic rank is necessary.
  2. Nominees should currently be actively employed in the teaching arena, preferably in one of the certified Genetic Technology Programs. Course work should include evolving Cytogenetic/Molecular Cytogenetic and or Molecular Genetic technologies [i.e. CGH, microarray analysis, PCR based testing, other emerging technologies, etc.]
  3. Nominees must be members of the Association of Genetic Technologists.
  4. Nominees must be NCA certified.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  1. Nominee needs to have demonstrated outstanding professional capabilities in the teaching of students at either the graduate or undergraduate level.
  2. Nominee needs to have demonstrated a commitment to education at their institution and to the AGT.
  3. Nominee needs to have contributed to the genetic technology community, either through students or publications.

 

 

NOMINATION PROCEDURE:

1. Individuals may be nominated either by students, former students, or colleagues.

2. One (1) original and four (4) duplicate sets of all materials for each nomination must be submitted to the FGT and be post marked by the deadline. The Foundation for Genetic Technology reserves the right not to process applications found to be late or incomplete as of the application postmark deadlines.

These documents should be sent in a single packet:

a. The completed application form (below).

b. A letter of nomination in support of the nominee from a student, former student or colleague. The nominator’s name and association with the nominee must be included.

c. The names and contact information for 2-3 additional references. Supporting letters from the references may also accompany the application.

d. An essay by the nominee describing how they fit the selection criteria and their accomplishments (including evidence of continuing education both in new genetic technologies and new educational pedagogy, if possible).

e .An essay from a student (can be the same as the nominator) explaining why the nominee should be given the award.

f. Nominee must supply current curriculum vitae, documentation of teaching experience, AGT membership, NCA certification and course curriculum(s) [to evaluate the teaching of advanced technology].

Note: All letters/essays should address the nominee’s strengths in teaching, accomplishments and ways in which their teaching or administration techniques make them outstanding educators.

NOTIFICATION PROCEDURE

1. The award recipient will be notified by phone by the Chair of the Awards & Scholarships Committee with a confirmation letter to follow.

2. Nominees not selected will be notified by letter and will be congratulated for having been nominated.

3. The monetary award will be sent directly to the award recipient at the time of selection. A certificate will be presented to the award recipient at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Genetic Technologists. . If the recipient is unable to attend the Annual Meeting a representative may accept the certificate on his/her behalf.
