FGT HISTORY
In 1992 the Board of Directors of the Association of Cytogenetic Technologists, Inc. (ACT), now known as AGT (Association of Genetic Technologists, Inc.) recognized the need for a foundation to better serve the educational needs of its membership.
The Foundation was organized exclusively for scientific, literary and educational purposes. The exempt purpose of the Foundation is education. Funds and assets are to promote education in genetic technology through improvement of public understanding regarding the nature of such technology and provision of professional opportunities for training through grants, scholarships and awards.
The Foundation was officially incorporated in the State of Kansas on May 18, 1995. The Foundation received approval from the IRS on December 28, 1995, as a corporation exempt from federal income tax under section 501(a) of the Internal Revenue Code as an organization described in section 501(c)(3) and can accept tax-deductible contributions. The Board of Trustees of the Foundation includes two representative appointed by the Board of Directors of the Association of Genetic Technologists, Inc. (AGT), three members of AGT not serving on the AGT Board or Council of Representatives and two Public Members with expertise in such areas as education, research, industry, publications, scholarships, finance, etc.
